A day in the life of our aquatic ecology team
Springtime is a very busy period for the Grand Union Canal Transfer’s aquatic ecology team, with May and early June being the optimal months for completing our all-important ecology surveys.
Understanding the wildlife and ecology that resides along the scheme’s proposed route is integral to ensuring their protection, and vital to delivering a scheme that supports the ecosystems it passes through.
We caught up with Max Ellis and Calum Anderson from the aquatic ecology team, as they headed to the Daventry Reservoir to undertake fish environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys to identify the species that live in the water.
We’ll be diverting water to the Daventry and Drayton Reservoirs as part of the scheme, so it’s important we understand what wildlife lives there and protect the various species in their habitats.
Max and Calum demonstrated how they complete these all-important surveys, and explained why they’re important to providing a better understanding of the species that reside within the Daventry Reservoir.
