The water recycling process explained
Water recycling is an important and innovative process that ensures homes, schools and businesses around the UK receive clean, safe and high-quality drinking water, but many customers are unaware of how the process actually works. To address this, we’ve created a short animation to take you through the process, demonstrating how water recycling is a vital solution for tackling future water shortages.
The water that comes out of your tap at home can be sourced from many locations, including rivers, reservoirs and in some places, directly from the sea. This water is then cleaned or ‘treated’, to remove contaminants from industry or agriculture, making sure it is safe to drink.
Regardless of the water source, water is treated by water companies before it reaches our homes, and teams of expert scientists sample the water daily to ensure there are no harmful substances in it, and that it is safe to drink. Once treated, the clean water is delivered to customers through an extensive network of storage tanks, water towers and pipes.
The safety and quality of drinking water has always been a top priority for water companies, and the Drinking Water Inspectorate was formed to provide reassurance on the quality of this drinking water in the UK.
